Project Update 5

15 May 2025

We are pleased to share our fifth bulletin update on the progress of the Crisis & Emergency Response Reform Project. We are currently focused on preparing for the next engagement phase and deepening our understanding of current services to inform future design.

Project activities in the past fortnight

Over the past fortnight, our efforts have focused on two key areas: validating the proposed Service System Design and progressing research and planning for the upcoming Service Design workshop series.

Service System Design Validation

A Validation Workshop was held with the Department of Health to test preliminary Service System Design. This design is informed by insights from the previous Service System Design workshop series and all desktop research conducted to date. The Validation Workshop identified remaining system- and service-level considerations, which we will continue exploring during the next engagement phase.

Service Design Workshops

For each of the five new or redesigned mental health and wellbeing services (clinical assistance, crisis telehealth, crisis outreach, crisis stabilisation and drop in safe spaces), we have conducted desktop research focused on two key areas:

  • Analysing the current state of comparable national and international models of care, including their service components, system linkages, workforce composition, target cohorts, and intended outcomes; and
  • Synthesising insights from these models to inform the development of future state options and service linkages.

This research will shape the considerations and questions we will test through our upcoming Service Design Workshop series.

Next steps

  • Define Workshops
A Define Workshop will be held for each of the new or redesigned services with the Department of Health to develop a shared understanding of the current state of each service and define future state options.
  • Service Design Workshops and Consultations
A series of Service Design Workshops and supporting consultations will be undertaken with service providers and system stakeholders to inform the development of each service. This work will build on prior design activities and be supported by iterative desktop research.
